About

This is Old Joe, a red brick clock tower in the centre of Birmingham's campus. This image is just of the clock face on a clear, blue sky.

Hello world!

We are an interdisciplinary network based at the University of Birmingham bringing together researchers from across the University working on phenomenology with linguistics, AI and computational psychiatry, with practitioners and individuals with lived expertise of mental healthcare, to enhance the understanding and treatment of psychiatric disorders.

Our network is lead by Professor Matthew Broome and Dr Francesca Brencio and is funded by the Interdisciplinary Research (IDR) Accelerator Network+ scheme from March 2025 to March 2026.

Our planned activities as part of the network include:

  • Seminars on key themes such as "Artificial Intelligence, Linguistic Analysis, and Metaphorical Frameworks in Mental Health Conceptualization", "Delusional States and Psychedelic Substances: Comparative Analyses", and "Phenomenology Across the Lifespan"
  • Readings groups
  • Grant writing workshops
  • A writing retreat
  • A conference
  • An ECR Research Day
Any queries or questions, please get in touch with Jodie Russell at j.l.russell@bham.ac.uk
